Correctional officers successfully shot down a drone carrying illicit items destined for the Chania Correctional Facility on the afternoon of Saturday. Authorities prevented an attempt to smuggle prohibited goods into the prison using an unmanned aerial vehicle, according to a statement from Greece’s General Secretariat for Anti-Crime Policy.
Members of the External Security Service detected the drone heading toward the prison, specifically toward the inmates’ outdoor exercise yards.
How the Incident Unfolded
Prison security staff spotted the drone moving at high speed as it approached the courtyard area where inmates were being held.
Immediately after identifying the threat, officers activated the prison’s anti-drone defense system, causing the device to crash near a guard post outside the facility. Security personnel quickly moved in and discovered a large bag attached to the drone. At the same time, they detained an inmate who had approached the crash site in an attempt to retrieve the cargo.
The bag was found to contain, among other items, five mobile phones with chargers, two wireless routers, three SIM cards, four pairs of headphones, as well as equipment that could be used for illegal activity inside the prison. This included five metal blades, a folding butterfly-style knife, a metal cutter, and a 20-meter climbing rope.
An investigation is currently underway by the Chania Sub-Directorate for Crime Investigation and Prosecution, with authorities examining both the origin of the drone and the individuals intended to receive the illegal shipment.
