A new telephone scam is targeting unsuspecting citizens in Greece, with fraudsters posing as police officers and using automated messages to create the impression that callers are involved in illegal activity.

The scam uses a recorded message claiming that the recipient’s identity or personal information has been linked to an unlawful act. The caller is then instructed to press the “1” key to supposedly connect with a police representative.

The “1” key trap

Citizens have reported receiving calls from unknown numbers carrying the automated message.

One number used in such a call was 6985018179, although authorities warn that the numbers used by scammers may change or may be manipulated to appear different.

The Directorate for Cybercrime Prosecution has identified the scheme as “vishing,” a form of telephone fraud designed to obtain personal or financial information.

The scammers first seek to create fear and a sense of urgency, falsely claiming that the potential victim is connected to illegal activity. Their aim is to push people into acting quickly before they have time to question whether the call is genuine.

Police warn that the calls are fake

The Hellenic Police has made clear that it does not use automated telephone messages to inform citizens that they are involved in criminal or other illegal activity.

Police also do not ask citizens to press a key on their phones to be connected with an officer.

Authorities further emphasize that police do not request personal, financial or banking information by telephone, nor do they pressure citizens to take immediate action by claiming that an emergency requires it.

What citizens should do

Anyone receiving a similar call should end the call immediately and not press any key on their phone.

They should also never provide personal, financial or banking information to the caller.

Authorities recommend informing family members and close acquaintances about the scam, particularly older people who may be less familiar with this type of fraud.

Recognizing the warning signs of the scheme is an important protection measure, as the scammers rely primarily on surprise and fear to persuade potential victims to act.
