A 22-year-old man is being treated in the Burns Intensive Care Unit at Papanikolaou Hospital in Thessaloniki after suffering severe burns when he fell into an unguarded well containing hot water near the thermal springs of Samothrace.

The serious accident occurred on Sunday night, when the young man was walking with friends in the area of the springs. According to reports, it was dark and the group did not notice the presence of the well, causing the 22-year-old to fall inside.

Witnesses said the well was deep and that the young man was submerged up to his neck in the hot water. His friends reacted immediately, pulling him out and tearing off his clothes in an effort to limit the extent of his burns.

The 22-year-old was initially transported by a Hellenic Coast Guard vessel to Alexandroupolis, where he was admitted to a hospital for first aid.

On Monday, due to the seriousness of his condition, doctors decided he needed to be transferred to Papanikolaou Hospital in Thessaloniki, where he remains intubated in the Burns Intensive Care Unit.

Doctors found that he had suffered second-degree burns covering 49% of his body. According to the latest information, his condition remains serious, but he is no longer considered to be in immediate danger.

The family of the 22-year-old has said it intends to take legal action against the municipality and any responsible authorities, claiming that the well had been left without adequate safety measures.
