An early-morning apartment fire in Kolonos, a densely populated residential district northwest of central Athens, left two people dead, on Saturday morning.
The blaze broke out at approximately 5:20 a.m. in a third-floor apartment of a multi-unit residential building at the intersection of Argous and Platonos streets. Firefighters responding to the scene discovered a woman unconscious inside the apartment during the initial search. A man was later found in the same condition. Both victims were pronounced dead.

Emergency crews mounted a coordinated response, with 18 firefighters, seven fire engines and an aerial ladder truck deployed to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to neighboring units.
Two women from an upper floor suffered respiratory problems due to smoke inhalation and were transported to a hospital for treatment. Other residents of the building were evacuated safely.
Authorities said the fire has been brought under control. The cause remains under investigation.
