Μake us preferred on Google A fire broke out in an apartment building in Sparta, southern Greece, shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday, sending thick smoke through the building and trapping several residents inside their apartments.
The fire started on the first floor of a building on Agiou Nikonos Street. Smoke quickly spread through the common areas, leaving several residents unable to use the stairs to evacuate.
Eight firefighters responded with three vehicles and a specialized ladder truck to conduct the firefighting and rescue operation.
Firefighters managed to contain the blaze before it spread to other apartments. During the operation, they rescued a man who had been trapped inside one of the apartments.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the investigative division of the Sparta Fire Service.
