First ‘Yellow’ Fire Alert Issued for Attica This Summer

High temperatures, low humidity and strong winds have placed Attica and seven other Greek regions under increased wildfire risk, prompting authorities to step up preparedness measures

Greece has issued its first “yellow” wildfire alert of the summer for Attica, with authorities warning of an increased risk of fires on Thursday, June 18.

According to the Civil Protection wildfire risk forecast map, eight areas have been placed under high risk level (Category 3 – yellow): Lasithi, Heraklion, Karpathos, Lesvos, Ikaria, Samos, Chios and Attica.

The inclusion of Attica marks the first time this summer that Greece’s capital region has reached this level of fire danger.

The heightened alert comes as weather conditions create a more challenging environment for wildfire prevention, with high temperatures, low humidity and stronger winds increasing the likelihood that fires could start and spread quickly.

Authorities are urging residents and visitors to exercise caution, particularly when engaging in outdoor activities that could accidentally trigger fires. These include burning dry vegetation or using equipment that may create sparks.

Civil Protection services are also on increased standby, with additional patrols and emergency response plans in place to address any potential wildfire outbreaks.

Officials continue to emphasize public awareness and responsible behavior as key factors in reducing the risk of fires during periods of elevated danger.
