Four people have died from West Nile virus infection in Greece within a single week, while several other patients remain hospitalized, raising concern among health authorities.
A total of five patients are being treated in intensive care units, while another eight remain hospitalized outside ICUs. The vast majority of reported cases have been recorded in the Attica region, which includes Athens, prompting heightened alert from the National Public Health Organization (EODY).
Athens-Area Districts Among Most Affected
Several areas in eastern and southern Attica have emerged as hotspots for infections, including Chalandri, Marousi, Glyfada, Vari, Voula, Vouliagmeni and Markopoulo.
An increased number of cases has also been recorded in central Athens, according to health authorities.
Authorities Urge Mosquito Protection Measures
Officials are advising residents to take precautions against mosquito bites by using insect repellents and wearing clothing that covers the arms and legs.
Health authorities also recommend immediate medical attention if symptoms appear, particularly high fever, severe drowsiness or lethargy, and changes in awareness or interaction with the surrounding environment.
People experiencing these symptoms are advised to contact a doctor and seek hospital care.
