A tragic boat accident off the coast of southern Lesbos has resulted in the deaths of four migrants — one man, two women, and a child — while 34 others survived.

The incident occurred on the morning of Tuesday, October 7, near Tsilia in the Gera region. Local reports indicate that strong winds reaching up to seven Beaufort and waves of around 1.5 meters contributed to the vessel’s crash against the rocky shoreline.

Rescue Efforts and Survivors

The Hellenic Coast Guard rescued the survivors, who were then transferred to the Closed Controlled Facility at Kara Tepe in Lesbos. All passengers, both the deceased and the survivors, were of African origin.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the shipwreck as part of ongoing monitoring of migrant crossings in the Aegean Sea.

The Aegean route between Turkey and Greece remains one of the most dangerous paths for refugees and migrants trying to reach Europe. Incidents involving overcrowded and unseaworthy vessels are unfortunately frequent, often exacerbated by severe weather conditions in the region.
