Moldovan oligarch and politician Vladimir Plahotniuc was arrested on Tuesday at the Athens International Airport, according to an announcement by Moldovan police.
Plahotniuc, 59, was previously the chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova and even served as vice president of country’s parliament from 2010 to 2013, until fleeing the southeast Europe nation in 2019 and living in exile in Turkey.
He was arrested on an outstanding Interpol warrant on charges of managing a criminal organization, fraud and money laundering, all filed by Moldovan authorities.
An official in Chisinau was quoted by local media as saying that Plahotniuc and another individual were arrested at the airport, and while in transit for a flight to Dubai.
He fled Moldova in June 2019 when the party he led lost power. A few months later, an arrest warrant was issued against him for money laundering. He has already been convicted, in absentia, for fraud and embezzlement case reportedly totaling one billion USD.
