Greek authorities on Wednesday announced the arrest of a 29-year-old Turkish national accused as the mastermind of a transnational crime gang, known as “Baygaralar”, operating out of Adana, in southeast Turkey.

The suspect was identified as Ramazan Bayğara, with police saying the foreign national was arrested last Friday in the central Athens district of Ampelokipi on 14 outstanding warrants issued by Turkish authorities last year, including homicide, drug smuggling, migrant trafficking and gun running.

According to media reports, police first tracked the man after arresting another two Turkish nationals in Chania, on the island of Crete, during an investigation into drug smuggling. The pair are accused of facilitating Baygara’s escape from Turkey.

The same media reports cited cooperation by Greek and Turkish intelligence services, as well as Interpol, in the detection and location of the suspect.
