The Greek government has reaffirmed its willingness to engage in dialogue with farmers but made clear that no additional financial measures will be introduced beyond what has already been announced. Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis emphasized that discussions are contingent on roads remaining open and the representation of the entire agricultural sector.
Speaking to political reporters, Marinakis said the government supports increasing farmers’ incomes through existing measures while avoiding policies that would create “two-speed citizens.” He stressed that proposals from opposition parties calling for new measures could imply additional taxation on the broader public.
Regarding ongoing road blockades, including those that disrupt major routes and critical infrastructure such as ports and airports, Marinakis stated that the police are ready to intervene immediately. “Tolerance for road closures has limits,” he said, clarifying that supporting the sector’s demands is different from causing widespread disruption for citizens.
Marinakis also highlighted that payments to farmers have reached record levels this year, exceeding those of previous years. He urged the agricultural sector to engage constructively with the government, noting that dialogue can continue as long as the agreed conditions are met.
The message comes amid a wave of protests by farmers across Greece, who have set up roadblocks demanding further support for their sector, including higher subsidies and protections against unfair competition. The government continues to maintain that its financial and policy measures are fixed, while emphasizing citizen safety and the functioning of essential services.
