Greece Food Prices Drop as Government Pushes to Cut Costs

Food prices in Greece fell 0.4% year-on-year and 2.3% from June in July, according to Eurostat, prompting Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos to say government efforts to control prices are producing results

Greece’s food prices fell in July, with Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos saying government efforts to control prices are beginning to produce results despite continued pressure from high energy and fuel costs.

According to Eurostat data cited by the minister, food inflation in Greece stood at -0.4% in July compared with July 2025, while prices fell 2.3% compared with June 2026.

In the eurozone, food prices were 0.8% higher year-over-year and 0.2% lower than in June.

The figures come as Greece continues to face an uncertain international environment, including two wars in the wider region and elevated oil and fuel prices.

Theodorikakos says efforts will continue

Theodorikakos said the government would not ease its efforts to address the cost of living.

“Obviously, we are not becoming complacent and in no way are we celebrating,” he said, adding that the government is “working with a plan, continuous interventions and responsibility toward society.”

He said the government is working with the relevant bodies to promote a fairer and more competitive market.

According to the minister, efforts to strengthen the disposable income of Greek households extend beyond controlling prices. He pointed to government policies aimed at boosting employment, reducing taxation — particularly for younger people — and attracting productive investment to Greece.

New initiative targeting essential goods

The government is also preparing a national initiative aimed at reducing prices on essential everyday goods.

Theodorikakos said preparations are continuing “at an undiminished pace” for the initiative, which is expected to begin in early September.

The minister said addressing the cost-of-living pressures requires sustained action rather than political slogans, adding that the government would continue its efforts to support households.

“We continue with persistence in our effort to support society,” he said.
