Greek authorities have uncovered what they describe as a suspected contract-style murder plot after discovering a heavy weapons cache inside a stolen vehicle in the area of Kalyvia, near Athens.

The investigation began when police received information about possible drug trafficking in the area. During surveillance operations, officers identified a car that was later confirmed to be stolen. Inside, they found three Kalashnikov rifles, pistols fitted with silencers, gloves, helmets, and containers filled with gasoline—equipment investigators say is commonly associated with organized attacks.

Further inquiries led to the identification and arrest of a man from Crete, who is believed to have stolen the vehicle and was allegedly preparing a targeted killing.

According to police sources, the suspect has a significant criminal record. He was imprisoned in 2006 for homicide committed as a minor and had previously escaped custody. At that time as well, authorities reportedly found Kalashnikov rifles and other weapons in his possession.

Investigators believe the discovery of the arsenal and the suspect’s arrest have prevented a planned, organized assassination.
