Greek Power Operator Warns of Organized Phone Scam

Fraudsters posing as representatives of Greece's electricity distribution operator are attempting to obtain personal information and arrange in-person meetings, the company says

Greece’s electricity distribution network operator has issued a fresh warning to customers about organized phone scams, urging the public not to share personal information with callers claiming to represent the company.

The warning follows recent arrests of members of criminal groups involved in defrauding citizens.

According to the operator, scammers have been calling people from unknown mobile numbers while falsely identifying themselves as employees or representatives of the company or another public body.

The callers claim there are unusually high electricity bills and ask questions about household appliances, such as air conditioners, in an attempt to gather information about valuables or cash kept at the property. In some cases, they also try to arrange appointments for what they describe as an inspection.

The company stressed that it never requests information about money or valuables and does not schedule inspections through unsolicited phone calls from unknown numbers.

Customers who receive such calls are advised not to disclose personal information, not to arrange meetings with the callers, and not to hand over money, valuables or personal belongings to anyone claiming to represent the company.

Anyone with doubts about the legitimacy of a call is encouraged to contact the operator directly through its official customer service channels.
