A failed phone scam attempt in Varkiza, a coastal area near Athens, led to a police chase and a road accident after two suspects posed as employees of Greece’s electricity distribution network operator and attempted to deceive a homeowner.
According to reports, the two men contacted the owner of a residence by phone, presenting themselves as technicians from DEDDIE, Greece’s electricity distribution operator. They used a common scam method, convincing the victim to place money and jewelry in a bag and leave it in the yard of the property so they could collect it.
The homeowner, however, realized the scheme before completing the plan and alerted police.
Police chase on the coastal road
Police officers who arrived in the area located the suspects’ vehicle and attempted to stop it, triggering a chase along the coastal road.
During the attempted escape, the vehicle collided with three passing cars, causing a chain-reaction crash. Despite the collision, the two suspects abandoned the car and fled on foot towards the beach, taking advantage of the confusion following the accident.
Evidence found inside the vehicle
During a search of the abandoned vehicle, police discovered scattered banknotes inside the car. Authorities are now investigating whether the suspects may be linked to other phone scam cases reported recently.
The vehicle was transferred to the Crime Investigation Directorate for forensic examination, as authorities attempt to identify the suspects and determine whether they are connected to a wider criminal operation.
The investigation and efforts to locate the two men are ongoing.
