A mathematics professor at the University of Patras has introduced an unusual measure ahead of the upcoming examination period, requiring students to provide medical documentation if they want to wear glasses during exams.
According to a report by Greece’s public broadcaster ERT, the professor informed students that glasses will be permitted in the examination room only for those who have a medical certificate confirming that they need them.
The measure is intended to prevent students from using so-called smart glasses, which can be equipped with cameras and connectivity features that could allow them to use technology to cheat during examinations.
The decision comes as technology and artificial intelligence have become increasingly integrated into everyday life, particularly among younger people, raising concerns about maintaining academic integrity during exams.
University backs focus on students’ own knowledge
University of Patras Rector Christos Bouras also addressed the issue, telling ERT that students should rely on their own knowledge and avoid other practices during examinations.
The professor’s measure is specifically aimed at preventing the use of glasses that could provide students with technological assistance during exams, while allowing their use when supported by a medical need.
