Ami Yogev, a resident of Modi’in in central Israel, arrived in Greece in mid-September and travelled to Mount Olympus. He last contacted his family on Sunday, Sept. 20, sending photographs and reporting that he was climbing toward the summit. His family lost contact with him the following day.
He had reportedly stayed overnight at the Spilios Agapitos mountain refuge on Sept. 19 before continuing toward Mytikas, the highest peak of Mount Olympus. Israeli media reports citing his family said he may have sustained an ankle injury and had indicated that he intended to descend the mountain.
When repeated attempts to contact him failed, his family approached the Israeli embassy in Athens, which alerted Greek police. His rental car was subsequently found parked in Litochoro, the town at the eastern foot of the mountain.
Search operations involved Greek emergency services and volunteers.
An Israeli volunteer rescue team eventually located Yogev’s body in the Mavrologgos stream area, at an altitude of about 1,840 meters.
