A 30-year-old Italian tourist is in critical condition after being seriously injured by the propeller of a yacht while in the sea off Othonoi, a Greek island in the Ionian Sea, on Thursday afternoon.

The incident occurred on August 27, but the circumstances that led to the woman entering the water remain unclear. Authorities are investigating whether she fell from the yacht or entered the water voluntarily.

The yacht’s engines were running at the time, and the woman was swept toward the propeller, suffering a serious leg injury.

She was immediately pulled from the water and, with the assistance of the Hellenic Coast Guard, was taken to the area of Himarolia in northern Corfu.

She was then transferred by ambulance to Corfu General Hospital.

Emergency surgery in Corfu

Doctors at the hospital performed emergency surgery to control the bleeding and stabilize her condition.

Because of the severity of her injuries, doctors determined that she needed to be transferred to the University General Hospital of Ioannina in northwestern Greece.

The woman was airlifted to the hospital and is now being treated in its Vascular Surgery Department.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the incident, including how the woman ended up in the water and how she came into contact with the yacht’s propeller.
