A major port infrastructure project on the Greek island of Kalymnos has moved a step closer to implementation after receiving approval for funding support from the country’s shipping authorities.
The project, titled “Construction of a Ferry Vessel Pier Outside the Port of Kalymnos,” has a total budget of €13.12 million and is expected to be included in Greece’s “Transport 2021–2027” development program.
Local officials described the decision as a historic milestone for the island, saying it marks the beginning of a new era for Kalymnos’ port facilities and transportation infrastructure.
According to the municipality and the island’s port authority, the project received the backing of Shipping and Island Policy Minister Vassilis Kikilias, clearing the way for the next stage of the funding process.
Mayor Giannis Mastrokoukos said the development represents the largest infrastructure initiative in the island’s history and follows more than two decades of efforts to move the project forward.
In a statement, local authorities said the progress was the result of close cooperation between the municipality, regional officials and parliamentary representatives.
