LAOS party leader and television presenter Filippos Kampouris has been remanded in custody following his defense statement in a fraud case involving Greece’s national social security agency, e-EFKA.
The investigating magistrate and prosecutor ordered the same treatment for the presenter’s wife, who is also accused of playing a leading role in the case. According to the charges, the alleged scheme caused losses of €1.5 million to e-EFKA, while the total hole in the Greek state’s finances is estimated at around €5 million.
In addition to Kampouris and his wife, three other defendants allegedly linked to the group were remanded in custody. They include a 54-year-old accountant and a couple who allegedly acted as front persons for Kampouris in connection with his business activities.
Another woman of Romanian origin was ordered to remain in custody because of a European arrest warrant issued in connection with a separate case.
The remaining five defendants were released after giving their statements, with the investigating magistrate and prosecutor agreeing on their release. Depending on the individual case, they were placed under restrictive conditions, including a ban on leaving the country, mandatory reporting to a police station and bail ranging from €4,000 to €8,000.
