Μake us preferred on Google Two Georgian men were arrested in Larissa after carrying out a series of apartment burglaries and stealing more than €149,000 in cash, foreign currency and jewelry over a 12-day period.
The two suspects were caught in the early hours of Aug. 20 after a security camera alerted the owner of an apartment that burglars had entered his home while he was away on vacation.
The arrests followed an investigation by the Larissa Subdivision for the Prosecution and Investigation of Crimes.
Security camera leads police to burglars
The apartment owner was vacationing along the coast of the Larissa regional unit when an app connected to his home security camera sent an alert to his cellphone after the burglars entered his third-floor apartment.
At about 4:15 a.m. on Aug. 20, the owner contacted the Larissa Police Directorate’s Operations Center. Three minutes later, at 4:18 a.m., officers from the police unit and the specialized unit arrived at the apartment building on Ioustinianou Street, in the Agios Konstantinos neighborhood.
The suspects were initially spotted on the second floor as they attempted to escape. They eventually became trapped in the stairwell on the sixth floor and were arrested at the scene.
According to police, the men had discarded surgical masks, gloves, women’s stockings, a cellphone, improvised burglary tools, master keys and other equipment while attempting to flee. They also carried specialized attachments designed to be fitted onto the master keys and open high-security door locks.
Ten apartments targeted in 12 days
According to the investigation, the suspects operated mainly in the early morning hours. They broke the mechanisms of older locks or used master keys to open locks of a type described as “trident” locks.
The two men are believed to have broken into 10 homes in Larissa between Aug. 7 and Aug. 19.
Police said that in the nine burglaries preceding the final incident, the suspects stole a total of €60,400 in cash and gold items and jewelry estimated to be worth about €89,000.
They stole more than €149,000 overall, including cash, British pounds and jewelry. In one apartment alone, after thoroughly searching the bedroom, they found and stole €55,000 in cash.
The investigation found that the suspects appeared to target apartment buildings, particularly in the area of Ioustinianou Street, although authorities are still investigating the reasons for their choice of locations.
Suspects detained pending trial
According to local newspaper Eleftheria, one of the suspects, aged 42, had been released from prison in November 2025 after facing charges related to aggravated theft.
The second suspect, aged 40, legally entered Greece in June 2025.
Both men were charged with aggravated theft and, following their statements before an investigating judge, were ordered held in pretrial detention and taken to prison.
Police are also investigating the possibility that the two suspects had accomplices.
