A lifeguard’s swift response proved lifesaving on a beach in Chania, on the northwest coast of Crete, after successfully resuscitating a 20-year-old man who was pulled from the water unconscious.

The incident occurred on the beach of Nea Chora in Chania, where the young man was found in critical condition, reportedly after entering the sea despite reportedly not knowing how to swim.

According to local news outlet Kriti360, beachgoers and the on-duty lifeguard quickly noticed the man struggling in the water. The lifeguard rushed to the scene and brought the unconscious swimmer to shore.

CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) was initiated immediately, and an ambulance was called. According to local reports, the lifeguard continued resuscitation efforts for about five minutes, administering oxygen as the young man repeatedly drifted in and out of consciousness. Eventually, the effort was successful, and the young man recovered.

Paramedics from the National Emergency Aid Center (EKAV) arrived shortly after and transported him to Chania General Hospital for further medical evaluation and care.
