A 25-year-old mother in the Greek city of Thessaloniki has been charged with exposing a minor to danger after her five-year-old son was found throwing objects from a sixth-floor apartment balcony.
The woman was brought before a public prosecutor on Wednesday and referred to a fast-track court procedure, while the child has been placed under the care of relatives until further notice, according to local reports.
Prosecutors acted after the incident, which took place on Tuesday morning in a residential building. Passers-by alerted authorities when they noticed a child on a high-floor balcony behaving in a way that posed potential danger.
According to information from the case, the child first used a hose to spray water from the balcony before beginning to throw various household items onto the street below. The activity reportedly continued for around 45 minutes.
Police units arrived at the scene and accessed the balcony via the building’s rooftop in order to ensure the child was safe. Officers then located the mother, who returned home shortly afterwards.
The woman reportedly told police that she had left her son briefly in the care of another person while she went to a medical appointment. However, during that time, the child was left alone in the apartment.
Following the intervention, both mother and child were taken to a local police station, where she was subsequently arrested.
The case is now being examined by the court, while authorities have ensured that the child remains in a safe environment with family members pending further proceedings.
