A valuable Greek Post (ELTA) property in Mykonos remains abandoned despite its prime location, while the organization continues paying €4,500 per month to rent a different space for postal operations, raising concerns about mismanagement.
The two-story building in Gialos, Mykonos, spans 150 square meters and has been left unused for decades. Local observers note that the property could either house the island’s post office or be rented or sold, potentially generating up to €25,000 per month, given its prime position in the main town.
Instead, ELTA continues operations from a rented facility, prompting criticism from residents who see the idle property as a wasted asset. Estimates value the building at €10 million, highlighting the missed economic opportunity.
The local community points to the broader context of ELTA’s restructuring, which has already led to the closure of 46 branches out of 204 scheduled to shut in the coming months, supposedly to improve financial efficiency. Despite these cuts, the failure to utilize the Mykonos building has fueled debate over priorities and asset management.
Residents argue that renovating and using the Gialos property could reduce rental expenses, improve local postal services, and better leverage ELTA’s assets, rather than leaving a prime location to deteriorate.
