A naval mine has been discovered in the sea area off Epanomi, near Thessaloniki, at a depth of 28 meters, according to the Hellenic Coast Guard.
The Thessaloniki Port Authority was alerted on Monday morning after explosive material was detected in the area. The discovery was made during a follow-up inspection carried out as part of expansion works for the sixth pier of the Port of Thessaloniki.
Hellenic Navy notified after underwater discovery
The object was located 28 meters below the surface, and the Central Port Authority of Thessaloniki immediately informed the relevant Hellenic Navy service to carry out the required procedures.
No further details were provided regarding the origin or condition of the naval mine, while authorities are expected to handle the discovery according to established safety measures.
