In a revolutionary step, the Holy Metropolis of Nea Ionia, Philadelphia, Heraklion and Chalcedon unveiled this week “ΛΟΓΟΣ – LOGOS” – the first artificial intelligence–powered tool to serve as a modern assistant for believers who wish to delve deeper into matters of Orthodox faith.

The announcement comes two weeks after the Church of Greece discussed the issue of utilizing AI.

Dubbed “ΛΟΓΟΣ – LOGOS”, which translates into “word” and “reason” in Greek, the tool uses artificial intelligence (AI) in order to provide accurate  information on theological, ecclesiastical and spiritual issues.

Orthodox Church officials clarify however that AI is artificial intelligence, a technological tool that serves humankind. It does not replace clergy, Orthodox teachings, or worship practices. Instead, it is meant to help illuminate faith rather than alter it.

“LOGOS” was created in collaboration with the ICT Lab Heron, as part of a pioneering partnership between the Church and the Greek AI research community, with the aim of developing a specialized algorithm that integrates ethical technology with religious education.

This algorithm recognizes, processes and conveys the content of Orthodox ecclesiastical thought, offering the user an authentic and responsible experience of spiritual information.

Athanasios Davalas, Academic Director of AI Programs at the University of the Aegean and Head of Heron supervised the project.
