Pesticide containers were found discarded in cultivated farmland near the Loudias River in the Thessaloniki area of northern Greece, raising concerns about potential environmental contamination.

The waste was discovered at a location near the river, with authorities examining the possible risk to the soil and groundwater from chemicals contained in the pesticides.

Containers removed before cleanup

The Municipality of Chalkidona, which was notified of the incident, took steps to arrange for the removal of the discarded pesticide containers.

However, before the scheduled cleanup operation could take place, the containers had already been removed from the site.

Authorities are considering whether the person who originally discarded them returned to collect them, possibly after realizing that information on the containers could help identify them.

The Municipality of Chalkidona has filed a complaint with police so the incident can be investigated and the person responsible for the illegal disposal of the pesticide waste can be identified.
