A 36-year-old police officer tragically took his own life on Sunday afternoon while on duty at the police’s Criminal Investigation Department in Athens.
According to initial reports, the officer — a father of one — had reported for duty as scheduled and showed no apparent signs of distress or psychological turmoil. Colleagues said he appeared composed and professional, with no behavioral red flags. He had even been making plans for an upcoming holiday during the Holy Spirit long weekend.
The officer began his shift at 6:00 a.m., and just over an hour later, at approximately 7:30 a.m., he was found in his workplace having used his service weapon to shoot himself in the head.
No Indication of Foul Play
Reports cited early forensic findings that point to suicide, with no signs of criminal involvement. “Initial autopsy data confirms that this was an act of self-harm,” they noted.
While colleagues described the officer as well-liked and dependable, investigators are now looking into the potential personal reasons that may have led to the tragedy. A personal motive is believed to be the most likely cause, although all possibilities remain open at this stage of the investigation.
Authorities are expected to launch an internal investigation and a statement from the Ministry for Citizen Protection expected shortly.
