Celebrated Greek sociologist, academic and political thinker Konstantinos Tsoucalas died on Tuesday, August 18. He was 89.
Born in Athens in 1937, Tsoucalas studied law at the University of Athens before pursuing postgraduate studies in philosophy of law and sociology at universities in Heidelberg, Munich, Paris and in the United States. He later earned a doctorate in letters and humanities from the University of Paris.
Although trained in law and sociology, Tsoucalas became best known for his wide-ranging body of work examining Greek society, the state, education, social inequality, politics, and the broader forces shaping contemporary life in Greece.
His academic career began as a researcher at the National Center for Social Research (EKKE), followed by work at the French National Center for Scientific Research. He subsequently taught sociology at the University of Paris, before returning to Greece, where he became a professor of sociology at the University of Athens. Tsoucalas also served as scientific director of EKKE, and maintained a prominent presence in Greece’s intellectual and public sphere.
His international academic career included fellowships and visiting professorships at leading institutions in the US, including at Columbia and Princeton. His extensive scholarly and literary work has been translated into several languages.
In March 2025, Tsoucalas was elected a full member of the Academy of Athens, in the chair of Sociology and Social Theory, one of the highest distinctions in Greek intellectual life.
His career also extended into politics. In January 2015, he headed SYRIZA’s state ballot in the national elections and was elected to Parliament.
In its condolence statement, SYRIZA described Tsoucalas as an intellectual who went beyond the university classroom, emphasizing his longstanding involvement in major ideological and political debates and his connection to the values and struggles of the Left.
Tsoucalas was the longtime partner of psychologist, professor, and author Fotini Tsalikoglou.
His cremation is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, August 19, at the Ritsona Crematorium.
