A high school in Lamia, central Greece, was broken into and vandalized by unknown individuals, who caused damage throughout the building and spilled paint from recent maintenance work.

The incident was discovered on the morning of Monday, Aug. 17, when teachers arrived at the 4th Experimental General High School in the Amfithea area and found that a door had been forced open.

According to lamiareport.gr, the intruders are believed to have entered the school sometime between Thursday afternoon, Aug. 13, after the end of summer duty, and Monday morning.

Paint spilled and school property damaged

The vandals wrote slogans on the door they had forced open before heading to the basement, where they found paint from recent maintenance work and emptied it onto the floor.

The fact that the paint had dried suggests the vandalism may have occurred Friday night or Saturday.

The intruders also pulled a paper holder from a bathroom, cut the air-conditioning pipe at the school cafeteria, and left lights on and windows open when they departed.

In an unusual move, they carried a bench from the schoolyard and placed it on a ledge between the ground and first floors. It is believed they may have intended to use it to climb above the school’s sign, behind which the teachers’ offices are located, although they did not manage to enter those areas.

Teachers call for stronger security

School principal Kiki Iliopoulou and teachers said the damage was not extensive this time, but stressed that the repeated incidents remain a serious concern.

They acknowledged that having security guards at schools around the clock would be difficult to implement across all schools. Instead, they have proposed installing security cameras that would operate only when students and teachers are not present.

Similar vandalism has reportedly occurred repeatedly at both the 4th High School and 4th Middle School of Lamia, as well as at the nearby 1st High School and 1st Middle School.
