Greece’s food safety authority has ordered the immediate recall of several food-contact products sold as “bamboo” after laboratory tests found they were actually plastic items made from melamine resin.

The Hellenic Food Authority (EFET), through its regional directorate in Attica, inspected and sampled food-contact products including plates, food containers and spoon sets marketed as bamboo.

The products were labeled “SPRING Bamboo Plate,” “Bamboo Fiber – Natural Collection” food container and “JULONG COMMODITY Life Style” bamboo spoon set. They are imported by the company SPRING DEPARTMENT STORE I.K.E.

Following laboratory testing by Greece’s General Chemical State Laboratory, the products were classified as non-compliant because they were not made of bamboo but of melamine resin.

Consumers urged not to use products

EFET said marketing the items as “bamboo” could mislead consumers about their composition and nature.

The authority also noted that these plastic food-contact products cannot contain bamboo, as bamboo is not among the substances approved for use in manufacturing plastic items intended to come into contact with food.

EFET has therefore requested the immediate recall of the identified products and similar items, while inspections continue.

Consumers who have purchased the products are urged not to use them.
