A forensic report has laid bare the scale of abuse suffered by a 10-month-old baby in western Greece, documenting more than 40 injuries and suggesting months of systematic mistreatment.

The findings, compiled by the Patras Forensic Medical Service, point to both recent and older injuries, including burns and fractures, which experts say were deliberately inflicted. The baby remains in critical condition in hospital as investigators work to establish a timeline of the alleged abuse.

The baby’s 18-year-old mother and her partner were remanded in custody earlier this week. The new findings provide further detail on the extent of the alleged abuse.

Evidence Suggests Prolonged Abuse

According to the forensic assessment, the child’s injuries were not isolated. Medical evidence suggests repeated harm over time, with wounds covering multiple parts of the body.

Among the most serious findings were fractures in the infant’s legs, alongside extensive skin injuries. The report also confirmed burns consistent with deliberate infliction.

Authorities now believe the abuse may have begun at least as early as February.

Allegations Against the Couple

Investigators allege that the male suspect carried out acts of violence against the infant, including burning her with cigarettes and biting her during episodes of anger, particularly while intoxicated.

He is reported to have admitted to some of these actions.

The mother, meanwhile, faces charges for failing to protect the child. In her testimony, she told authorities she was afraid of her partner and did not intervene.

Both suspects are charged with causing grievous bodily harm to a vulnerable person — a felony under Greek law — and remain in custody following their court appearance.

How the Case Unfolded

The investigation began on March 16, 2026, after a report that an infant in the town of Pyrgos had suffered a serious leg injury.

Police initially detained the mother on suspicion of child endangerment. The baby was transferred from a local hospital to a pediatric facility in Patras, where doctors identified the full extent of the injuries and deemed the condition critical.

The new forensic evidence prompted prosecutors to upgrade the charges and pursue felony-level prosecution.

The infant continues to receive treatment at the Karamanandaneio Children’s Hospital, where doctors are monitoring her condition closely.
