The rack rail line connecting the mountainous towns of Kalavryta and Diakopto, in the northwest Peloponnese, again malfunctioned on Wednesday, with emergency crews required to safely remove 77 passengers aboard.
The train, known as “Odontotos” in Greek, and operated by FS-subsidiary Hellenic Train, came to a halt just before 2 p.m. on the 1332 route.
Based on the emergency protocol, a backup train was sent to the site to aid. However, due to the severity of the damage, both trains were immobilized at the location with limited access.
Hellenic Train later announced that it was working with the relevant authorities to coordinate their safe transport, while the Civil Defense agency was notified.
The specific line is among the most historic in Greece, essentially a sight-seeing attraction instead of a transport mode.
