A rescue operation on Mount Olympus has ended in tragedy, as a woman who was reported missing near the “Prionia” mountain refuge was found dead earlier this afternoon.
According to officials, the incident occurred around 13:30 local time. The woman was discovered unconscious on a trail slightly above the Prionia area by a volunteer doctor with the Hellenic Rescue Team. Despite immediate efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The operation, which was launched earlier in the day, involved 14 firefighters from the Litochoro and Katerini fire departments, as well as members of the 2nd EMAK (Special Disaster Response Unit). Rescue teams had been mobilized to reach the remote location quickly, but the woman could not be saved.
Authorities have not yet released the woman’s identity or details about the circumstances that led to her death.
Mount Olympus, Greece’s highest mountain and a major hiking destination, draws thousands of visitors annually. While many trails are well-marked, the terrain can be challenging, and accidents are not uncommon, especially during peak hiking season.
An investigation is expected to determine the exact cause of death.
