A 91-year-old woman in Patra, western Greece, was targeted in a carefully orchestrated scam in which the perpetrators threatened to kill her before posing as police officers and convincing her to hand over €28,000 in cash and jewelry.
The incident took place on Tuesday, Aug. 18, according to the woman’s complaint to police.
Scammers threatened to kill her
The perpetrators initially called the elderly woman and told her they would kill her unless she gathered all the money and valuables she had in her home.
Shortly afterward, a second suspect contacted her, posing as a police officer.
The man claimed that authorities were monitoring a gang that was targeting elderly people and told her that, in order to protect her property, she needed to gather her cash and jewelry and hand them over to the police.
The woman was convinced by the story and followed the instructions she was given.
She left the valuables under a trash bin
The 91-year-old gathered €8,000 in cash and jewelry worth a total of €20,000, placed them in a bag and left it under a trash bin at a location specified by the alleged police officer.
The suspects then went to the location, took the bag and fled.
Police have launched an investigation and are searching for those responsible.
