A large-scale search operation is ongoing in northern Greece after a senior firefighter was reported missing in the wider Serres region. The 45-year-old, who heads a local fire service unit, has not been seen since the morning of December 23.
The disappearance was reported to police by his wife after he failed to return home for more than 24 hours and did not report for duty. Despite being on leave, the firefighter was known to regularly visit his station, raising concern among colleagues and family members.
Fire service teams from his local unit, supported by crews from neighboring areas, have been deployed to search mountainous, rural, and hard-to-reach locations. The operation is focused on locating both the missing man and his vehicle.
Police are also involved, assisting with coordination and information gathering. At this stage, additional national emergency response units have not been called in, but authorities say search efforts remain intensive as they work to determine his whereabouts.
