Greek authorities have launched a search and rescue operation to locate a swimmer who went missing on Sunday evening near the coastal town of Rafina, just northeast of Athens.
The swimmer is believed to have been in possible distress in the area of Mati, a seaside community that gained tragic notoriety in 2018 for a deadly wildfire.
The alarm was raised shortly before 8:40 p.m. on August 3, when emergency services were alerted to the swimmer’s disappearance. A coordinated effort involving both air and sea units was quickly mobilized.
The Hellenic Coast Guard deployed a patrol vessel, supported by two private boats and a passenger ship, to comb the surrounding waters. A Super Puma helicopter was also dispatched to provide aerial support in the ongoing search.
