Hundreds of seasonal firefighters from across Greece have gathered in Syntagma Square since the morning, calling for permanent, stable employment and better working conditions.

The firefighters have massed in the square holding banners and chanting slogans. Earlier in the day, a delegation submitted a resolution to Parliament, and a march toward the Maximos Mansion is expected to follow.

Their central demand is year-round, 12-month employment, which would allow them to remain with the Fire Service throughout the year and put their training and operational experience to full use.

Alongside this, they are calling for:

  • Scrapping the age limits set in hiring announcements
  • Allowing all seasonal firefighters to take part in recruitment procedures
  • Reinstating 600 seasonal firefighters who were left without positions

The seasonal firefighters argue that they already have the training and experience needed, and say they should be able to serve not just during the peak-risk months but all year long.
