Greece is bracing for severe weather as Storm Adel brings heavy rainfall and thunderstorms over the next several days. Meteorologists warn that the most critical period will be Thursday and Friday, when the highest cumulative rainfall is expected.
The storm will impact northwestern Greece, parts of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, as well as the islands of the Eastern Aegean. Residents in already affected regions are urged to take precautions as the intense and prolonged rainfall could exacerbate existing flooding and disrupt daily life.
The storm’s name, Adel, has origins in Israel and is primarily used as a female name. This naming reflects a collaborative effort in the Eastern Mediterranean involving Greece, Cyprus, and Israel, where each storm’s name carries cultural significance from the three countries.
According to Greece’s National Meteorological Service (EMY), the forecast over the next few days is as follows:
- Tuesday, Nov. 25: Localized heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected in the northern Ionian islands (including Corfu, Paxoi, and the Diapontia islands) and coastal areas of Epirus.
- Wednesday, Nov. 26: Strong rain and storms will continue across the Ionian islands, Epirus, Aetolia-Acarnania, western and southern Peloponnese, and Eastern Macedonia from the afternoon.
- Thursday and Friday, Nov. 27–28: The storm will intensify, affecting the Ionian islands, Epirus, western and central mainland Greece, the Peloponnese, and central and eastern Macedonia and Thrace. Friday will also bring severe weather to the Eastern Aegean islands and the Dodecanese.
Meteorologists predict the storm will subside in western Greece by Saturday, Nov. 29, and in eastern regions by Sunday, Nov. 30.
