Beachgoers in the coastal area of Kechries, on the western side of the Saronic Gulf, were startled after a shark was spotted swimming close to shore, prompting swimmers to leave the water as a precaution.
According to local reports, the shark was seen moving through shallow waters a short distance from the beach, drawing the attention of beachgoers who watched the animal’s movement from the shoreline.
The sighting caused some concern among bathers.
Marine experts have repeatedly noted that shark sightings in Greek waters remain relatively rare and are rarely, if ever, linked to attacks on humans.
The incident comes amid public attention over rare marine wildlife appearances in Greece this year. In recent months, local media have reported more sightings of large sea creatures, including sharks and dolphins, near popular beaches and coastal settlements, as warmer sea temperatures and changing marine conditions continue to affect wildlife movement across parts of the Mediterranean.
