Shocking Video Captures High-Speed Crash on Crete

Security camera footage shows a car losing control, becoming airborne and crashing into a tree and parked vehicles in Hersonissos, with only one person suffering minor injuries.

Dramatic security camera footage has captured the moment a car lost control at high speed in the popular resort area of Hersonissos on the Greek island of Crete, launching into the air before crashing into a tree and several parked vehicles.

The video shows the vehicle veering off course, striking a tree and becoming airborne before slamming into parked cars and overturning on the road. The impact caused extensive damage to multiple vehicles.

Moments after the crash, people from nearby businesses rushed across the street to help those involved, as panic spread among witnesses.

According to an eyewitness, the car was travelling from Malia toward Heraklion along the old national road and entered a bend at an extremely high speed. The witness said another motorist had reported being overtaken by the same vehicle earlier at an estimated speed of around 200 km/h, although this has not been officially confirmed.

The eyewitness described the vehicle as hitting roadside barriers, overturning, colliding with several parked cars and a nearby business, before coming to rest against a tree after being thrown onto an elevated section beside the road.

Despite the severity of the crash, no fatalities were reported. One man sustained minor injuries after being struck by his own vehicle, which had been hit during the incident. According to the eyewitness, the man had just stepped away from the driver’s seat moments before the collision, a circumstance that likely saved his life.

The witness also noted that the crash occurred on a Sunday, when pedestrian traffic was relatively light. Had it happened on a weekday, he said, the consequences could have been far more serious.

Commenting on the incident, the eyewitness stressed that dangerous driving plays a major role in such crashes, alongside factors such as alcohol and substance use. While road improvements are planned for the area, including the construction of a new interchange and additional junctions, he said drivers also bear responsibility for respecting traffic rules and driving safely.
