A heartwarming video of a single father telling his teenage son that he has just won the lottery has captured hearts across social media. In the clip, Paul Harvey, 51, from Attleborough in Norfolk, England, asks his son, “How many millionaires do you know?” before adding, “Now you know one.” The two then jump up and down, laughing and hugging in celebration.

The emotional moment is even more poignant given Harvey’s recent battle with bowel cancer. Speaking to UK media, the father of two said he had been eager to share the news and that it felt like “an eternity” waiting for his children to return from school so he could tell them. He captured the moment he told his son on video.

Harvey bought a £5 EuroMillions Millionaire Maker ticket with a free Lucky Dip for the UK National Lottery draw on 4 July. A week later, he was contacted by the National Lottery and urged to check his account. At first, he thought the message was a scam, but after verifying the contact details were legitimate, he realised he had become a millionaire.

As for how he plans to spend some of his winnings, Harvey says his top priority is treating his children to their first trip abroad — to Greece.

Harvey added that the destination holds special meaning for him, as he spent around 12 years living in Cyprus and is excited to show his children a part of the world he loves.

He is very excited about the new possibilities the windfall of cash will present for his family, and also plans on buying his daughter a car, but he says he is generally cautious about how to spend the money and wants to “do it right”.

“Life hasn’t always been easy, but the kids mean the world to me, and they always come first,” he told press.

The UK Millionaire Maker is a supplementary EuroMillions game played exclusively in the United Kingdom. It works like a raffle and guarantees that at least one player will win £1 million in every draw. Special draws also take place regularly, creating multiple winners at the same time.
