A batch of “smart” traffic-monitoring cameras has become operational on key routes in the Athens region, marking the launch of a regional plan aimed at improving road safety.

The regional governor of Attica carried out an on-site inspection on Thursday evening at the junction of Poseidonos and Alimou avenues, where the first seven cameras have been installed.

The governor said a total of 44 cameras would be in place at high-risk locations by February, while by the end of June all 388 cameras planned under the programme would cover the main road arteries of the Athens metropolitan area, creating a unified network for traffic enforcement and accident prevention.

The project, with a total budget of 17.6 million euros, is financed by the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility and concerns cameras designed to detect red-light violations. The cameras will operate 24 hours a day and will be capable of capturing photos and video even in low-light conditions.

Footage will be transmitted automatically, without human intervention, to a central violations management system accessible exclusively to the Greek police, which will impose penalties in line with the Highway Code.
