Severe weather conditions overnight caused flooding, landslides and fallen trees in parts of Crete and Chios, prompting emergency responses from local authorities and fire services.

Crete Hit by Heavy Rain and Strong Winds

Gale-force winds and intense thunderstorms swept across several areas of Crete, creating multiple disruptions. The most significant problems were reported in inland parts of the Heraklion region and southern areas of the island.

In the municipality of Faistos, torrential rain flooded roads, leaving them covered in mud and debris. On the road leading to the Tympaki land consolidation area, a bridge was split in two around midnight, forcing authorities to close the road to prevent accidents.

Landslides were also reported. In one case, a large rock fell onto the roadway between the villages of Kamares and Vorizia, leading to a temporary traffic interruption.

Strong winds caused trees to fall in several locations across the island. Fire service crews worked throughout the night to cut and remove fallen trees and respond to related incidents.

Flooding in Chios

The island of Chios also experienced significant problems during the downpour. Firefighters carried out 28 water pump operations from basements and storage areas following calls from residents, particularly in the areas of Mega Limnionas, Thymiana and Agia Ermioni.

According to reports, some of the flooding was worsened by blocked streams and the dumping of branches and debris, which obstructed natural water flow.
