A group of students and parents from a school in a suburb of Athens is stranded on the remote Greek island of Gavdos after strong winds disrupted ferry services, with authorities now considering evacuation by a Greek Navy frigate if conditions do not improve.

Around 47 people from a primary school in Voula had traveled to the island to take part in national celebrations marking Greece’s Independence Day on March 25, joining a small local community for the event.

However, adverse weather conditions have prevented the return ferry from operating, as the vessel serving the route is unable to sail in winds exceeding safety limits. The group has remained on the island since the disruption began.

According to the head of the school’s parents’ association, officials have been informed of the situation and contingency plans are in place. If weather conditions continue to prevent ferry travel, a Greek Navy ship may be deployed to bring the group back safely.

Despite the unexpected delay, reports from the group suggest that students are in good spirits and are experiencing daily life on the remote island positively.

The visit is part of a broader educational initiative that connects schoolchildren with small and remote communities across Greece, aimed at giving students firsthand experience of life in isolated areas.
