Unanswered questions surround the fatal stabbing of a 27-year-old man late Wednesday in a park in the south-central Athens district of Agios Dimitrios, with authorities investigating a possible personal motive.
According to police, a 20-year-old local man was brought in for questioning and later arrested by the organized crime division. He is suspected of involvement in the killing, while an 18-year-old and two young women were also detained on charges of assisting an offender.
Initial findings suggest the prime suspect is the current partner of the victim’s former girlfriend. The two men allegedly spoke by phone shortly before the incident and agreed to meet to “settle their differences.” At the park, an argument escalated, and the suspect allegedly stabbed the victim, inflicting a fatal wound to the heart. Forensic evidence indicates the victim also struggled before dying.
Police have ruled out robbery, as the victim’s belongings were found intact. Investigators are examining phone records and security camera footage from the area to reconstruct the sequence of events.
The suspect, reportedly a navy NCO, will appear before a military prosecutor, initially.
Local media outlets have highlighted the case due to the victim’s family background – his father is a high-ranking police officer – and an up-until-now unclear motive.
