A 64-year-old man accused of killing his 67-year-old brother at their family home on the Greek island of Crete remained unrepentant after the attack, according to police, as he faces homicide and domestic violence charges.
The fatal stabbing occurred Saturday night in the village of Martha, in the Municipality of Viannos. Investigators say the suspect repeatedly stabbed his brother in the neck area and left the knife lodged in the victim’s body. Officers found the house covered in blood, with the suspect’s footprints throughout. The victim also bore signs of a severe beating.
Police involved in the investigation described the suspect as “cold-blooded” based on his demeanor and statements in the hours after the killing. He allegedly told officers he had slaughtered his brother “like a pig” and angrily insisted the victim had tried to hit him, adding that no one could strike him. Authorities said his tone and account indicated no remorse.
Earlier that same evening, the suspect had called the local police station to complain that his brother had taken his car keys. He did not ask for officers to intervene, but police sensed tension between the two men during the call. The 67-year-old could be heard denying he had the keys, which reportedly further angered the suspect. Officers decided to go to the home, but by the time they arrived, the attack had already taken place. The keys that allegedly sparked the dispute were later found in the suspect’s own room upstairs.
On Sunday, the suspect appeared before prosecutors in Heraklion, who brought criminal charges for homicide and domestic violence. He then requested and received a deadline to prepare his defense and is scheduled to testify on Tuesday.
The man is already known to authorities, with prior incidents in the village linked to alcohol use, a quick temper and firearms. Fifteen years ago, he allegedly tried to kill a fellow villager by shooting him from behind. The victim in that earlier case said the suspect had previously argued with him and later ambushed him with a shotgun outside his home.
The investigation into the brother’s killing is ongoing.
