A 17-year-old boy is in critical condition after being hit by a city bus in central Piraeus on Saturday evening, authorities said.
The accident occurred shortly after 7:30 p.m. near the city’s Municipal Theater, when a bus operating on Route 130, which connects Piraeus to Nea Smyrni, struck the teenager under circumstances that remain unclear.
Teen hospitalized in critical condition
The boy sustained severe head and chest injuries and was rushed to the Tzaneio Hospital, where doctors immediately intubated him and performed emergency brain surgery with the assistance of a neurosurgeon.
He is currently being treated in the intensive care unit, with his condition described as critical.

Authorities have not yet determined how the incident unfolded. Investigators are examining whether the teenager was attempting to cross the street or lost his balance and fell into the roadway, possibly into a dedicated bus lane.
The area where the accident occurred includes lanes where buses may travel in directions different from other traffic, a factor that could be relevant to the investigation.
Driver detained, probe ongoing
Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene, providing first aid before transporting the injured teen to the hospital.
The bus driver was taken into custody by traffic police in Piraeus. A breathalyzer test conducted on the driver was negative.
Police are continuing to gather evidence, including security camera footage and witness statements, as they work to establish the exact cause of the serious accident.
