Thessaloniki’s iconic Aristotelous Square was transformed into a vast open-air dance floor on Sunday, June 14, as hundreds of participants from Greece and abroad came together to perform a synchronized zeibekiko and set a new Guinness World Record.
People of all ages traveled from across Greece—including Crete, Athens and Thessaly—as well as from several countries abroad, among them Norway, Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Germany, Austria, France, England and Cyprus. United by a shared passion for Greek culture, the participants joined forces to perform a specially choreographed routine in perfect unison.
Beyond the record attempt, the event carried a strong social message. It aimed to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and support the work of Alzheimer Hellas. Organizers described the initiative as a powerful expression of memory, hope and solidarity, while also celebrating one of the most iconic elements of Greece’s cultural heritage: the zeibekiko.
Before the choreography had even concluded, organizers received confirmation that they had surpassed the previous record held by Cyprus. A total of 832 dancers took part in the performance at Aristotelous Square, with the entire process overseen by an official Guinness World Records adjudicator who attended the event in person.
