Thessaloniki: Police Bust Electricity Theft Ring with $9M+ Losses

Greek police arrested 3 key members of a multi-person criminal organization responsible for over 9 million euros in damages to the national grid operator HEDNO

A criminal organization responsible for damages exceeding 9 million euros to HEDNO (the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator) has been targeted in an ongoing police operation in Thessaloniki. The operation is being carried out by officers from the Organized Crime Unit of Northern Greece in cooperation with HEDNO.

According to the Greek Police (ELAS), the members of the criminal organization carried out specialized tampering of HEDNO electricity meters at both commercial and residential properties across the regions of Attica, Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly, and the Peloponnese, with the aim of stealing electricity.

So far, three core members of the organization have been arrested, while a total of 105 individuals are being charged as perpetrators of electricity theft.
